Stump Grinding Cairns
Below grade stump grinding across Cairns — narrow walk-behind machines for tight backyards and wider tracked gear for larger stumps and clearing jobs.
A stump left after a tropical tree removal becomes a nuisance faster than in cooler climates. In the wet season, the timber draws termites and fungal rot within months, throws suckers from the root system, and continues moving nearby concrete as the roots die off. Grinding it on the same day as the tree removal is cheaper and saves a return visit. Around Cairns we bring two machines — a narrow walk-behind for residential gates and a tracked grinder for heavier, more open-access jobs.
Three things set the price: how wide the stump is at ground level, what species it is, and how deep you need the grinding to go. Most Cairns clients want 200 to 300mm below ground level — enough for turf, paving base or a shallow bed. If a concrete slab, footing or new tree is going in over the old spot, we grind deeper, typically 400 to 500mm, sometimes further on older fig and raintree stumps.
After grinding you get a mix of fine chips, disturbed soil and root fibre sitting roughly at ground level. That fill drops as the timber rots in the heat, so for any permanent surface — lawn, paving, or replanting — remove the chip and backfill with screened topsoil. We can include that as a separate line or you can shovel it yourself. Either way the stump is dealt with.

Stump Grinding FAQs
How far below ground does the grinder go?
Standard is 200 to 300mm down, which suits fresh turf, a paving base or a shallow garden bed. For a concrete pour, a footing or a new tree in the same spot we go deeper — typically 400 to 500mm, sometimes more on older fig stumps. Tell us what is going in and we match the depth to suit.
Will the machine fit through a standard Cairns side gate?
If the gate clears 900mm, yes. That covers the majority of established Cairns residential blocks. For narrower passages or inside-courtyard stumps, we assess during the site visit and work out whether we can crane the smaller unit in or use a hand tool on the tighter sections.
What is left in the hole after grinding?
A blend of fine chips, root fibre and disturbed soil roughly level with the yard. In the Cairns heat that fill slumps as the wood rots, so for turf or paving we suggest pulling the chip and backfilling with topsoil. For a garden bed you can add compost and let it settle through a wet season before planting.
Can you do several stumps in one visit?
Yes, and you save on the per-stump price because the travel and setup cost is shared across the lot. If a previous arborist left a handful of stumps or you want a row cleared at once, send through the count and rough diameters and we will price the whole lot together.
